Energy Sector: Case Study

The Challenge

The Business Improvements Team was established by a global organisation to create a step change in business processes. The challenge was that while the team were suitably qualified and experienced they lacked the influencing skills and political savvy needed to make things happen in a complex, global, matrix organisation. Indeed they became unpopular very quickly as they were seen to be challenging and “poking their noses into everything”. They were excluded, stonewalled and obstructed at every turn. They were also a remote team working across different time zones.

The Solution

Using elements from The Complete Influencer, Frances Tipper designed and delivered a two day workshop that challenged their thinking and gave the team new strategies to influence the business they were trying to help. Together, Frances helped them to not only develop new skills and capitalise on their strengths, but they also identified key allies and supporters so that they could influence indirectly and gain access to even the most unwilling and unwelcoming areas of the business.

This was followed up a few months later by a special WebEx session led by Mike Phipps which was designed to maintain momentum and to allow the more remote team members to get support.

The Outcome.

The WebEx session some time after the initial two day workshop demonstrated just how far the team had come individually and collectively. While team morale was never a problem, hearing real life stories about how they had used the skills and tools that Frances made available to them proved that the team were no longer at war with their own business and that they had realigned the relationship so that they were seen as a helpful resource.
